You might be like our family, big into Star Wars. Last year was huge for us with the long-awaited release of The Force Awakens. Bigger still was the revelation of the Rey character carrying the force and the hero’s journey into the future. In keeping with strong female Star Wars characters, something you may not have seen in your galactic travels is the Disney XD animated series Star Wars Rebels. It was clear to me by the channel placement that the target audience was primarily boys looking for an alternative to other Disney shows like Sophia the First. Rebels follows the story of reluctant heroes brought together to take on the growing Empire. It takes place before A New Hope and shares characters with the popular animated series The Clone Wars.
Following show chatter on social media, it seems that the series has surpassed their original demographic. This includes praise from adult fans and girls like my five-year-old daughter who loves the brave characters of pilot Hera Sydulla and rebel Sabine Wren.
Sabine is given voice by actor Tiya Sircar. Always one for supporting the Star Wars family and independent projects, I was happy to receive a press release about her latest non-animated endeavor, Miss India America. This film has been playing to sold-out International crowds and has become a festival darling. The story is set in the world of South Asian American beauty pageants. I didn’t even know that was a beauty world category. Tiya plays Lily Prasad, a strong woman conflicted with her culture and herself. Miss India America marks the film debut of actor Ravir Kapoor (Crossing Jordan). He wrote the screenplay with his wife Meerm Shim who is also one of the film’s co-stars.
Wishing her much continued success, we will be watching Tiya on Rebels and in this new comedy in theaters March 25th.
The Force and the support of the Star Wars community and my girl Ella is with her, always.
Here is the official release information:
