Continue ReadingAfter years of typing, it came out of nowhere: an aching, stabbing, tingling pain in my arms and hands. My primary complaint was a throbbing ache followed by pinpricks of fiery pain on my fingers, like someone putting out cigarettes on my skin. I couldn’t work with my hands in any capacity, and I couldn’t sleep. Nothing seemed to work to alleviate the pain. Not ibuprofen, not acetaminophen, not painkillers. I had carpal tunnel.
Continue ReadingSure, there’s always Independence Day, or The Patriot, but why go for world-destroying aliens and Mel Gibson with a ponytail when you can have (the far more family-friendly) Mr. Feeny from Boy Meets World as that most famous founding father from Massachusetts, John Adams?
Continue Readingaden + anais is primarily known for their amazing swaddling blankets, which are designed in a variety of squee-worthy adorable patterns. And while I’ll be reviewing those in the coming weeks (once the little one arrives) first I wanted to talk about some of their newer products, primarily their mum + bub skincare line which […]
Continue ReadingOh, baby, do we have a fun giveaway for Baby Week! It’s a Graco Sweet Snuggle LX in Oasis for one lucky GeekMom reader. These amazing swings really help you get in the swing of things with your new little one, providing them the back and forth comfort they’ve come to love (and you a […]
Continue ReadingThat’s right! We’ve got two more books to give away. Puff, the Magic Dragon Pop-Up, which we shared with you earlier last month, is the delightful new edition of the much beloved book, Puff, the Magic Dragon, inspired by the song written by Peter Yarrow and Lenny Lipton (and of course, made famous by Peter, Paul and […]
Continue ReadingJust because the holidays are over, it doesn’t mean giving is. That’s right, we’re giving away another copy of Puff, the Magic Dragon Pop-Up, which we shared with you earlier last month. The book is an expanded edition of the much beloved book, Puff, the Magic Dragon, inspired by the song written by Peter Yarrow and Lenny […]
Continue ReadingIf your family is anything like ours, books are big. And especially books with, well, shall we say, magical elements. And that just happens to fit the bill for the kind of books we see from Sterling Publishing. Sterling has a lovely Children’s imprint, as well as many others, and you’ll often see their logo […]
Continue ReadingWe all know that the iOS devices are worth their weight in gold as far as parenting goes. As a Geek Mom, it’s one of my favorite sneaky ways to get education in to my son’s life while he thinks he’s getting rewarded by playing with the iPad. But it can get a little overwhelming […]
Continue ReadingI had every reason in the world not to read Harry Potter. I just wasn’t going to do it. Oh, people told me I ought to. “You like hobbits! You like magic! You like elves!” But I didn’t see the point. I had my beloved books. And by the time the craze was really hitting, […]
Continue ReadingI couldn’t help but share this wonderfully thoughtful piece over at Gets Too Obsessed about her son’s Glee crush. I’m a self-professed fan of the show, mostly due to the nostalgia factor (I was a huge musical theater geek in high school, and had failed dreams of starring in Les Miserables). But what never ceases […]
Continue ReadingThanks to everyone who entered our contest over the last four weeks. What a whirlwind! Last week’s winner is Trishden (and while I’m always team Weasley I can understand that there’s just something about Severus…) With the movie breaking records around the world, we sure hope our lucky winners will be proclaiming their Potter fandom […]
Continue ReadingYou’re likely already read the printing adventures by our own GeekMoms over the course of the week. I am admittedly a bit of a Harry Potter fangirl, so this project seemed like a no-brainer for me. Kodak Design Gallery Software featuring Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows™ boasted all sorts of wicked good fun, and […]
Continue ReadingWow, it’s hard to believe that we’re already in week four of our Kodak and GeekMom giveaway! We’ve been busy putting our own printers to work (which were given to the four editors, Jenny, Kathy, Corinna, and myself) provided by Kodak (you can learn about my favorite Harry Potter character later this week and the […]
Continue ReadingIf you’ve not played Dragon Age or Dragon Age II, you might want to avert your eyes. You can’t tell a good love story without some spoilers, eh? I’ve been playing video games for the better part of my life, and through the years, I’ve certainly had my crushes. So when Dragon Age came out, […]
Continue ReadingI don’t usually troll Yahoo! for inspiration, but when I saw this post about men dressing their wives I had to click. While not all geek women share my love of fashion, I can safely say that my amazing husband just simply has no clue. At this point in our relationship he’s just learned to […]
Continue ReadingAuthor’s note: This first appeared about two years ago at my steampunk novel blog, The Aldersgate Cycle. At the time I was knee deep writing the book of that name, and spent long hours pondering the meaning of steampunk, especially related to culture and literature. Hot on the heels of my graduate degree (with a […]
Continue ReadingI just came across this great retrospective on one of my favorite childhood shows, Clarissa Explains It All. I was a dedicated fan of Clarissa and all her antics, and am certainly grateful for her presence during my pre-teen years. I wasn’t entirely aware of my geekiness at the time — nor did I have […]
Continue ReadingIt’s the summer of 2006. I am enormously pregnant and working at Barnes & Noble, where the air conditioner keeps breaking, and I am frequently asked (with people staring at the lanyard with my name emblazoned on it) if I work here. No, really, I’m just a crazy pregnant woman wandering the aisles pretending to […]
Continue ReadingIf your family is anything like us, you take gaming seriously. My husband and I have an amazing group of friends with whom to play games, but none so dedicated as our D&D group. We’ve been campaigning for about two and a half years, now, and I’ve got to say, I never imagined it could […]
