If you ever wished you could be a part of space exploration, then you’ll want to free up your weekend on April 20th. The International Space Apps Challenge is an global 2-day hackathon where you can collaborate towards solving any of the 50 proposed challenges.
Think you programming skills aren’t up to snuff?
The Challenge is welcoming much more than your typical STEM geek. They’re also looking for participation from educators, artists, and designers. Challenges are divided four categories: software, hardware, citizen science, and data visualization. Some challenges are open-ended while others have very specific requirements so there’s bound to be something to fit your interest and work style. Sample challenges include:
“Catch a Meteor” Tracker: Create an app that would allow observers of a meteor shower to trace the location, color and size of the shooting star.
Backyard Poultry Farmer: Create a Backyard Poultry Farmer app with the objective of getting individuals and households back into agriculture through backyard chickens.
Curiosity At Home: Create a Backyard Poultry Farmer app with the objective of getting individuals and households back into agriculture through backyard chickens.
We Love Data: Rethink how people interact with space data in new and meaningful ways.
Lego Rovers: Design a remotely operation system to control a Lego Robot through a computer or smartphone.
“No Delay” Air Traffic Management: Create a crowd-sourced gaming and technology development platform to evolve the best ideas for future air traffic management.
Space Station Benefits To Humanity: Develop a tool to improve the understanding of the incredible benefits that International Space Station is delivering back to Earth.
Deployable Greenhouse: Develop a deployable greenhouse that could be used on a space mission to the Moon or Mars.
The International Space Apps Challenge encourages participants to join group events scheduled in 75 countries around the world to maximize collaboration, but you can also participate virtually from home individually or in teams. Have fun!
