Birthday Week: Buffy Cake for the Win

Don’t ever let yourself think that being a grownup means you can’t have an awesome birthday cake. You don’t have to go all out and have a themed birthday party to enjoy it, although I had one friend this year who threw herself a Firefly birthday party complete with costumed guests. How fun is that?

The cake in the photo was made for my friend Robin, a longtime Joss Whedon fan, and it is quite possibly the best birthday cake ever. A  Buffy the Vampire Slayer cake with red frosting and fondant decorations is exactly the sort of thing a mom could use to fuel another year of demon slaying.

My birthday isn’t until December, but I’m taking notes and making hints now, because there’s no way I’m going to settle for a quick bunch of cupcakes from the supermarket this year.

Update:

One of the comments at Whedonesque indicates that this cake was originally designed by  Courtney Clark at Cake Nouveau.  The professional version is really slick, but I still dig the idea of a cake this awesome that can be made at home.

There’s also some great suggestions for other Buffy cakes. Here’s a 21st birthday cake, a painted fondant Buffy cake, the Beast (from Angel), or this one,  or this post of pics (some good, some are Cakewrecks). It looks like the best way to turn a ho hum cake into a fantastic Buffy cake is to stab it with a stake. Preferably one that looks like it was made from the correct type of log, if you know what I mean. These cakes look amazing. Leave a comment here if you’ve seen another Buffy cake we should check out.
