GeekDad: ‘Pinocchio: An Illuminated Edition’ — Collodi Is Reimagined in Mignola’s Particular Style

Pinocchio: An Illuminated Edition by Carlo Collodi (Author) Mike Mignola (Illustrator) Lemony Snicket (Introduction, notes by)

Lemony Snicket is of the idea that no one who has read the real Pinocchio all the way through has retained its sanity, and he might be onto something.

As it often happens, Collodi made a mad romp about a hellish piece of wood who would never listen to his creator, Geppeto. Disney made it into a candy-coated version that bears little resemblance to the original. (Another example is The Once and Future King by T H White and its counterpart, The Sword in the Stone.)

This is a 9×12″ slipcase art book illustrated by Mignola and it has Snicket’s annotations presented as typewritten sheets.

Have you read Carlo Collodi’s classic? Do you wonder if Mignola is a good fit for it? Well… I couldn’t finish the real version (perhaps that speaks for my sanity) even though I am obsessed with original children’s books and what we know as classics. This one is a puzzler.

Pinocchio is dark and strange, with a weird sense of humor and a fair amount of violence (Collodi wrote it as a parody of parental warnings, after all). With more than fifty original illustrations and extended notes, Mignola and Snicket invite us to wander around Collodi’s masterpiece and, they reimagine together this weirdly attractive tale. If you happen to be a collector of odd and original fairy tales, this is for you.

Snicket, over one hundred annotations, and sixty-two removable pages slipped in amongst Collodi’s text, unfolds a parallel story, one where someone who is reading Pinocchio all the way though is growing slowly mad. Consider yourself warned.
