Love That Journey: ‘Schitt’s Creek’ Little People Collector Set

Schitt's Creek Little People set in box

Little People have come a long way!

From the little cylindrical wooden bodies with round heads (cute, but also a choking hazard) to the articulated versions that bend at the waist to the chunky figurines you see now, Little People have been entertaining kids for a couple generations now. (Remember the barn that moos? I loved that.)

A few years ago, Fisher Price caught on that our generation in particular is very attached to our pop culture (as evidenced by the success of things like Funko Pops), and started making Little People Collector sets featuring characters from shows that aren’t usually recommended for a preschool audience: SeinfeldStranger ThingsFriendsThe Office. (Two years ago they released a Ted Lasso set that I ended up buying for my wife for her birthday.)

The latest set, just out last week, is Schitt’s Creek, a show whose title had to be bleeped on the radio. In case you’re not familiar with the show, the Roses were extremely wealthy but lost everything due to fraud, and end up moving to a little town called Schitt’s Creek that they once bought as a joke but is now the only thing they own. Johnny and Moira, along with their two adult children David and Alexis—who are completely spoiled and unable to take care of themselves—end up living in the Rosebud Motel and experiencing some severe culture shock.

My family (the grown-ups and the older kids) have watched the show, and I was pleasantly surprised by the way the Rose family grew and developed over the six seasons. I wouldn’t necessarily call it a hero’s journey, but they definitely went from “people I’d hate to meet” to “people I might enjoy hanging out with” by the time the show ended. It’s a pretty remarkable show (and very funny), with so many meme-able moments throughout.

The Little People set features the four members of the Rose family with some fun details. Moira is wearing her garbage bag dress and Johnny is wearing a classic suit as usual. David is wearing a designer sweater, a fistful of rings, and sunglasses, and Alexis has her phone and floppy hat. (Apparently Alexis’ hand gesture, flopping forward instead of outstretched, is a first for Little People.) The box itself has them in front of the Rosebud Motel, and the back of the box has an illustration of the Roses in Little People style with some choice quotes (and some more details from the show).

While the toys are rated for ages 1 and up, there is a note that the content is rated for 17+ because of the show. (It also notes that “figures do not speak” which I thought was funny, but I’d forgotten about the talking Little People sets.) Of course, I have to admit that we will most likely keep ours in the box for display, but it’s good to know that if you’ve got toddlers and you want to let them play with them, they’ll fit right in with the regular Little People sets as well. Now, when do we get a Leverage set?

The Schitt’s Creek Little People set is available from Mattel for $25.

Disclosure: I received a sample set for coverage.
