GeekDad: Keep Your Hands Busy and Your Mind Still With These Two Books

GeekMom

These project books have different ideas to get you making and have a surprising trait in common, all the young art makers started learning the craft very recently (like 2019) and have grown exponentially in these five years. You can go from zero to Pro in a very short time lapse!

Creative Embroidery and Beyond- Inspiration, tips, techniques, and projects from three professional artists by Jenny Billingham, Sophie Timms, Theresa Wensing

The three gals behind these projects love intervening clothes, and using embroidery to embellish everyday objects. The step-by-step photos cater to beginner embroiderers but have some fun ideas for advanced crafters as well.

I am always amazed at the speed in which Walter Foster can identify on-trend Instagramers and teachers online and invite them to publish, it is a great way to commit to memory what you have learned, sometimes watching videos is tiring and a nice book can supply the inspiration and instructions you need at a slower pace.

Jenny Billingham (@flynn_and_mabel), Theresa Wensing (@get.stitch.done), and Sophie Timms (@mindfulmantra_embroidery)—each present six designs.

My favorite ones were Space-themed, although these sample hearts are lovely in their own right.

Up next, this craft was something I was curious about, and I was very surprised to find it easy to do (with stunning results).

Sweet Home Macrame: A Beginner’s Guide to Macrame-Learn to make jewelry, home decor, plant hangings, and more by Casey Alberti (Author)

This was a fun book for me as I had never attempted macramé before, but by watching the photographs, I was instantly confident I could do it. There are 12 step-by-step projects from wall hangings to coasters and earrings to attempt, and they all stem from three to four basic knots.

Casey Alberti is the Sweet Home Alberti founder, a small business selling macrame items and knotting lessons. The book offers access to her videos to ease your learning (twisting the right trendily is the major hurdle) and her color palette is very fun, especially the ombre projects.

The coaster displayed here arrived as a PDF, you can subscribe to the Quarto Newsletter here to learn about upcoming titles.
