GeekDad: ‘HeroQuest’ Expands With ‘Prophecy of Telor’ and ‘Spirit Queen’s Torment’ Quest Packs

GeekMom

HeroQuest is a lite role playing game where players take control of fantasy characters and explore dungeons to find treasure and complete objectives. The game originally came out in the 1989 and was quite popular. After over two decades of it being out of production, a new and improved version of the game was relaunched in 2021. I previously reviewed HeroQuest and it is GeekDad Approved! Previously there have been five quest pack expansions released. Two new quest packs are now available which not only includes new quests, but also two new heroes to add to your party.

What Are the New Quest Packs?

The Prophecy of Telor and Spirit Queen’s Torment quest packs are an expansions for the HeroQuest gaming system. The core game is required to play these quest packs. They are is designed for 2-5 players, ages 14 and up, and takes about 30-120 minutes to play. They are currently available for $34 from the Hasbro Pulse website. It is also available from Amazon (Prophecy of Telor and Spirit Queen’s Torment ) for about 10% less. The quest packs are published by Avalon Hill and Hasbro.

The Prophesy of Telor Quest Pack

Here is what you get in this quest pack:

  • 1 Warlock hero miniature
  • 1 Demonform hero miniature
  • 13  monster miniatures
  • 14 game cards
  • 6 dice
  • 1 quest book

The Prophecy of Telor quest pack comes with a new hero: the Warlock. This character starts off with a wand and they come with three Warlock spell cards. Two of them can only be used once per quest. However, the Demonform spell transforms the Warlock into a demon with an extra attack dice and they can ignore all traps. As soon as the Warlock suffers any amount of damage, the hero turns back to Warlock form. However, the spell is restored when you reduce a monster’s body points to 0.

In addition to the two hero miniatures, the quest pack also includes 13 monster miniatures all in a fiery orange. They are the same monsters as in the original HeroQuest system, but have new sculpts. There are also six fiery orange combat dice.

The quest pack also includes six equipment cards including a wand for the Warlock as well as five potions which can be purchased between quests from the Alchemist shop. There are also four artifact cards which feature spells scrolls.

This quest pack features 13 new quests to reveal the secrets surrounding the Talisman of Lore and the prophecy of Telor! Though the wizard Melar vanished long ago, it is known that he had been experimenting with vile Dread magic—alas, in his disappearance, all that could be found was the Talisman of Lore. The players must enter the maze of Melar and put an end to whatever foul machinations are at play! The quests that make up the Prophecy of Telor are a lot of fun yet challenging. In some your are trying to escape from the map while monsters are chasing you. In one quest, you use the same room but keep moving up the tower to many different levels.

The Spirit Queen’s Torment Quest Pack

Here is what you get in this quest pack:

  • 1 Warlock hero miniature
  • 14  monster miniatures
  • 15 game cards

The Sprit Queen’s Torment quest pack also includes a new hero and matching miniature. The Bard begins with a rapier which allows the character to attack diagonally. Plus as long has they only wear non-metal armor and do not carry a shield, the Bard gains an extra defense die for staying light on their feet. Three Bard spell cards are also included. Lullaby and Healing song can only be used once per quest. The Inspiring Tale spell can be regained when any hero the Bard can see, excluding themself, rolls 2 white shields while defending. This spell can be cast on any another hero to give them an extra attack die on their next attack.

There are also six ghostly turquoise combat dice.

In this quest pack, players must uncover an unusual disturbance amongst the spirits—and rescue the realm from evil as they embark on 14 thrilling quests. The elven sage Silvana, brilliant diviner and ally of Mentor, has been experiencing visions of spirits surrounding her beloved late apprentice, Nelath, a Spirit Talker slain by Zargon. Players must enter the Wyvern Keep and end whatever vile plot has disturbed Nelath’s eternal slumber—before a fate worse than death befalls her. In addition to the party of heroes, the players will encounter allies which they can control as characters during some of the quests.

Why You Should Play the New Quest Packs

I had the opportunity to play through and review the three previous quest packs, The Frozen Horror, The Mage of the Mirror, and Rise of the Dread Moon. I enjoyed playing all three. Each of those added new types of monsters and even allies. Only Rise of the Dread Moon added a new hero: the Knight. While he Prophecy of Telor and Spirit Queen’s Torment quest packs may not add new types of monsters, they each have more quests than the previous quest packs and feature new sculpts and colors of existing monsters providing more variability. Plus adding news heroes to the HeroQuest system is a big bonus. Both the Warlock and the Bard were available in an upper tier pledge when HeroQuest returned via crowdfunding. I am glad they are now available. Unlike the Wandering Monk and Rogue Heir heroes that were released individually, the Bard and Warlock each come with a complete quest and monster miniatures as well. Those who have collected all of the expansions will have a total of nine heroes from which to choose when forming a party.

In addition to adding new heroes, I found the new quests also quite interesting and challenging. I enjoy the new stories each provide as they add to the HeroQuest lore. Both quests have recently been added to the HeroQuest companion app which takes on the role of Zargon, the dungeon master and opposition to the heroes. This allows the quests to be played solo or completely cooperatively with all players being heroes. While I like playing with a group for the social aspect, I can still play HeroQuest whenever I want solo and still have a great experience.

HeroQuest is a great game to play with a family or a game group since it is easy to learn and quick to setup and start playing because you build the map as you play. While the suggested age is 14 and up, I played it with my children when they were younger as long as they have an adult of older siblings to help them. I recommend using the app so you can all play cooperatively or even play it solo. All of the expansions to the core game have really turned it into a game system.  If you enjoy playing HeroQuest, then you definitely need to add both the Prophecy of Telor and Spirit Queen’s Torment quest packs to your collection. If you don’t yet have HeroQuest, then I highly recommend getting at as well as the expansions and quest packs.
