Cute Creature Art Class: Enchanting Anime Beasties – Learn to Draw Over 50 Magical Monsters by Naomi Lord (Author)

The curious combination of magical creatures and kawaii features is not so easily achieved. Naomi Lord shares the secrets of her particular style in this how-to-draw book featuring 57 anime fantasy creatures.

Inspired by Dungeons and Dragons, Greek Mythology, Fairy Tales, and Horror stories, (curiously), this book is aimed at teens, as the degree of difficulty of the tutorials is deceptively simple.

The most interesting feature for me was how the fantastical creatures are grouped, and how the details abound about claws, fans, wings, tails, and more.

Land Walkers include Kitsune, Yeti, and Cerberus to name some, all of them include a couple of lines of where in the global folklore you can find them and their characteristics, so it works as a Fantastic Encyclopedia of sorts.

Air Gliders depict Manticore, Quetzalcoatl, and Pegasus; Sea Splashers invites you to draw Kraken, Akhlut, Kelpie, Mermaid, and last but not least, Night Dwellers represent a kawaii Cthulhu, Mothman, Wendigo, and Medusa. Horror is depicted cutely and endearingly!

Naomi Lord is a prolific artist with a very distinct style. Her artwork can be seen on Instagram where you can learn more about her. Lord will share the techniques she used to create these anime characters and include suggestions for using colored pencils, markers, digital programs, and more.
