Shortly before Christmas, I received a care package from Symbiote Studios, a creator of fine pop-culture plushies from big-name licenses (including My Little Pony) as well as their own homegrown creations (like Catnip Bravo). Included were Dinobot Slug from the Transformers line and the titular Shovel Knight himself.
While neither shape-changing outer space robots nor pixelated platforming protagonists exactly scream “soft and huggable,” I was instantly impressed with how well the team at Symbiote translated both subjects’ harsh, angular forms into positively adorable stuffed animals.
Obviously, they were the topic of much discussion in our house throughout the holiday season. Not the least of which was on Christmas morning when, upon opening his Peppino Pepperoni Plush (from speedy side-scroller Pizza Tower), my son was quick to point out that this too had been manufactured by Symbiote Studios—with a little help from the fine folks at FanGamer.
I share all this simply to say that, as Valentine’s Day grows ever closer, you’d do well to track down one or more of these amazingly soft creatures for your paramour, parent, or padawan. Unlike roses or Russel Stover Chocolates, which are tragically short-lived, Symbiote Studios creations are a satisfying and long-term addition to any fan’s collection.
Best of all, they are readily available—via both the Symbiote Studios Store and retailers like Amazon—and priced to move!
My beloved Slug (alongside other Gen1 heavy-hitters like Optimus Prime, Shockwave, Thundercracker, and Hound) retails for $29.99, while the Shovel Knight crew (Shovel Knight, Black Knight, Specter Knight, Troupple King, and Enchantress) comes in at a cool $24.99 each.
If neither of those particular franchises floats your boat, you’ll also find characters from G.I. Joe, Power Rangers, and even indie fighter Rivals of Aether alongside the aforementioned ponies and bots. At around 12 inches tall and suitable for ages three and up, they’re the perfect way to say “I love you” to that special someone.
