GeekDad: Ten Movies and Streaming Shows I’m Looking Forward To In 2024

I was disappointed in many ways with what 2023 had to offer. Looking back on my Geekdad preview of 2023 movies, so few of them impressed me. Indiana Jones and The Dial of Destiny was decent, but not what I’d call inspired. Spider-Man: Across The Spiderverse was nowhere near as good as the first film in the series. And Rebel Moon was the kind of train wreck I won’t even discuss.

So this year, rather than compiling a massive list of 2024 films, I’m going to cover just ten film and streaming offerings coming out in 2024 that have got me genuinely excited. It’s a shorter, more focused list, and I’m hopeful that it’s one I’ll be able to look back on proudly. You’ll see fewer sequels, (sorry, DUNC 2!) and this will more accurately reflect my own personal geek interests.

Constellation

This Apple TV+ series looks wild, and I honestly don’t know where they’re going with it, which is great. It’s categorized as a science fiction thriller, which is exactly what I like, and the trailer has me hooked. The first two episodes drop very soon, on February 21.

Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Season 2

I had to watch the first season of Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power twice to fully get a handle on the show – there are a lot of different subplots, and you need to pay attention to understand it all. I’m hopeful that the second season can continue the story in a good way and bring together some of the show’s disparate elements.

Fallout

I’ve played every Fallout and Wasteland game there is, even Fallout: Tactics, and I loved some more than others. Live-Action series based on video games don’t have a great track record – Fallout has a tough job to do. But the Brotherhood of Steel looks great in the trailer, and the mutants are solid as well. I can just hope that the show has a good plot, and I really hope that we get to see a Deathclaw at some point.  Fallout drops on Amazon Prime Video April 12th.

Agatha: Darkhold Diaries

WandaVision was one of my favorite Marvel streaming shows. Agatha: Darkhold Diaries looks to continue the story of one of that series’s best characters. We’ll get to see what becomes of Agatha Harkness after she snaps out of the spell in which Wanda Maximoff left her, and I was intrigued to hear the name Mephisto mentioned in the trailer, as he’s a character whose name was bandied about as a possible big bad for WandaVision back when that show was first airing.

Deadpool 3

It’s Deadpool, so I always knew it was going to be wacky. I knew that the show was going to be entering the MCU. I knew that they’d be featuring Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine as a character. And seeing characters from the Loki TV show appear in the trailer was a surprise but wasn’t shocking. The thing that shocked me was seeing Jennifer Garner from the 2005 film Elektra make an appearance. Now there’s nothing that’s off the table! I wouldn’t be any more shocked to see Nicholas Cage’s Ghost Rider or Jessica Henwick’s Colleen Wing. Deadpool 3 comes to theaters on July 26th.

X-Men ’97

X-Men ’97 will be a new animated series which picks up where the original X-Men series from the 1990s left off. The best part is that Disney has managed to include a large portion of the original voice acting cast, so you’ll be hearing familiar voices behind those animated characters.

Avatar: The Last Airbender

I’m a massive fan of the original animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender. When I recently listed my own personal 20 Favorite TV Shows of all Time, Avatar: The Last Airbender came in second place. I’ve remained skeptical that anyone could do the show justice in a live-action format, but I’m willing to give Netflix a try. Iroh and King Bumi look great, but Appa’s CG is a bit lacking.

I’m excited to see the inclusion of CS Lee, Ken Leung, and George Takei, actors who I very much enjoy, but I’m most excited to see that the original voice actor for the cabbage merchant will be making a return. My cabbages!!

Daredevil: Born Again

Back in 2015 when Daredevil first dropped on Netflix, we were all shocked that a Marvel television show could actually be good. We’d already seen the Avengers assemble on the big screen, but the idea of a unified MCU was still a new concept. Daredevil brought us a well-written, if overly violent story, and a villain that remains one of Marvel’s best castings to date.

Daredevil‘s second season was a massive disappointment, and led many folks to stop watching entirely. And while that’s understandable, it’s unfortunate, because I maintain that the third season of Daredevil is the best Marvel programming that Netflix ever put out.

Daredevil: Born Again will see not only the return of Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk, but also Foggy Nelson, Karen Page, and Benjamin Poindexter, all played by the same actors that appeared in the Netflix series. Given what they’ve done with Daredevil in She-Hulk: Attorney At Law, I’m very excited.

Mickey 17

The fact that Mickey 17 isn’t a sequel or a remake isn’t the only reason it’s near the top of my list. It’s got a fantastic original science fiction premise.

Mickey 17 is an “expendable”, a disposable employee on a human expedition sent to colonize the ice world Niflheim. After one iteration dies, a new body is regenerated with most of his memories intact.

I’m guessing that this film’s protagonist is the seventeenth iteration of himself sent down to explore the planet. The fact that he has all his memories intact is interesting, as you’d expect a story to bring a character into the situation knowing as little as the audience. On March 28th, I plan to be in the theater for this one.

The Three Body Problem

My top pick, and the show to which I’m most looking forward in 2024 is The Three Body Problem, adapted from a novel by Chinese Author Cixin Liu. The first book in the Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy, The Three Body Problem begins during China’s Cultural Revolution in the late 1960s. The book’s sequels, The Dark Forest, and Death’s End, end millions of years in the future.

I’ve read all three books, and even started watching the all-Mandarin adaptation on Netflix, which is difficult to follow when you’re painting miniatures and the only way to follow the dialogue is via subtitles.

They’ve cast Benedict Wong in the lead, and I’ve loved him in everything I’ve seen of his, so I’m very much looking forward to The Three Body Problem on Netflix when the entire eight-episode first season drops on March 21st.
