Miss Out on the ‘Clueless’ Comic Book Sequel? As If!

This week you’ll be totally buggin’ at the comic book store when you spot Clueless: Senior Year on the shelf. This true-to-the-original sequel is written by Sarah Kuhn and Amber Benson, with art by Siobhan Keenan and colors by Shan Murphy. The moment you flip through the pages you’ll feel transported back to the 90s as soon as you catch up again with Cher, Dionne, and Tai.

Senior Year takes turns following each of the three best friends as they navigate through their senior year of high school. Cher is having a bit of an identity crisis as she considers her future, Dionne decides to run for class president, and Tai must decide between her family and her dream.

Each story is relatable for teen and younger readers, encouraging them to be true to themselves and face the future with the support of their friends. Cher, Tai, and Dionne are joined by the familiar faces of Josh, Murray, and Travis, and those of us parents who grew up in the 90s will feel right at home with the unmistakable fashion and slang that fit into the story seamlessly, along with small homages to the film. Even Cher’s pink fluffy pen makes an appearance.

Parents and family are notably absent from the book; while none of the parents except Cher’s father played an important role in the film, seeing them in the comic as the girls struggle with big questions could have served as encouragement to confide in parents as well as friends when times are rough. (Tai’s story in particular feels like the parents would be involved in her decision.)

The girls’ hopes for the future and earnest efforts to make a difference are just as endearing as the movie, and it’s almost magical how effortlessly Clueless: Senior Year transports older readers back to the 90s. If you loved Clueless and want to pass its humor and enthusiasm to your own kids, pick up this softcover collection. Just sneak in some time to read it yourself first before you hand it over.
