Amy Lee Chats About Her New Kids Album ‘Dream Too Much’

While you might immediately recognize her as the powerful singer of Evanescence, your kids will come to know Amy Lee as the sweet voice that sings to them during playtime or lulls them to sleep at bedtime. Her new album for families, Dream Too Much, will be released exclusively on Amazon Music on September 30.

The album was inspired by her two-year-old son Jack, but Lee doesn’t have any plans to shift her career to just kids music just yet. “I don’t have any plans at the moment to make more music like this, and yes, this project was very special, but you never know what life is going to throw your way and what that could inspire,” Lee says. “Right now I’m working on some music for a film, booking a fall tour with Evanescence, and scheming about new (grown-up) music.”

Not only did Lee record Dream Too Much with her son in mind, she created the album with the help of her father, uncle, and sisters. With such strong family ties to the music, it’s no surprise the album contains a few covers of songs that were part of her own childhood.

“Dad played guitar and my parents sang all the time when I was growing up too, and ‘Rubber Duckie’ and ‘Goodnight My Love’ were most definitely Lee family household hits,” Lee says. “‘Alice’ is a song my grandma Ruth used to sing to us at bath time. ‘Goodnight My Love’ was the lullaby my sisters, brother and I heard the most as a kids.”

Music obviously played a large role in Lee’s childhood. “My parents felt that it was important that each of us learn at least one instrument growing up,” says Lee. “My family is very musical naturally, so it’s really not something any of us fought against too hard.

“Later on in my teenaged days, my parents let me host band practice in our garage, and encouraged me being in a band and playing with other musicians.”

Dream Too Much also features delightful original songs, including the title track and the sweet “The End of the Book,” which is practically an anthem for any geek kid who is sad when they reach the end of the story. “Read it again!” the song encourages.

As for Lee, her favorite song on the album changes constantly. “As with every album I’ve ever made, each song is my favorite at least for a few days,” she says. “The one I keep going back to right now is ‘I’m Not Tired.’ It makes me laugh and those harmonies are so much fun!”
