Are You My Asteroid-Busting Hero? …Sign in Friday Morning

ARKYD crowdsourced space telescope team hosts hangout Friday morning and recruits gamer skills to protect Earth against asteroids and other PHAs.

GeekMom Rachel’s Fund This column recently featured the Kickstarter project ARKYD, a project that will both mine asteroids for resources and make space telescopes that are accessible to the public, including schoolchildren. As the project achieves extra funding goals, they are adding some irresistible components. Read fast, because you don’t want to miss:

Hangout at 10 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time: ARKYD hosts a Gamer Hangout today, Friday, June 28th at 10:00 a.m.PT with Richard Garriott (Lord British) and Jon Mavor (co-founder of Uber Entertainment). They’re combining multiplayer gaming and crowd-controlled space telescopes– sounds intriguing! Live viewers will learn how to get game keys and avatars free.

•Additionally, if ARKYD reaches $1.7 million by the end of their Kickstarter fundraising on June 30, their stretch goal is to partner with Zooniverse to create Asteroid Zoo, a program that will allow students, citizen scientists, or space enthusiasts–all of us–to work on our own computers at home to find potentially hazardous asteroids (PHAs), such as the one that affected Russia in February, simultaneously also helping to train computers to better find them in the future.
