GeekMom Zombie Apocalypse Countdown (20 days to go)

Have you made your list? Photo: Judy Berna

After yesterday’s post I assume you’ve done some shopping or at least made out your master list. Today I am going to point you to some great resources for doing in depth research of your own. We each have unique needs and will adapt to the invasion in our own way. In my house we have no babies or toddlers to plan for, but being the mom with the artificial leg, and living in a cold climate that could make life tricky when the power grids fail, give us our own challenges.

Let’s start with something pretty basic. Like brains. Here’s a great post about how to make fake brains, as decoys for those hungry (nom) zombies.

If you’re a true zombie fanatic I’m sure you saw the Survival Kit  for Zombie Apocalypse that the Center for Disease Control put out this summer. Their website is full of great information and graphics. It spread through the internet  like a bad infection and got some people a bit freaked out. The CDC eventually spoke up to say it was all a fun way to help people be prepared for more realistic disasters, but we know the truth. And we welcome their tips.

If it’s not too late in your region, GeekDad Doug Cornelius wrote a great review for a Zombie Survival Class that is offered by REI stores across the country. Check the website, see if you can still catch one of these classes. Side note: REI also offers this fun zombie bowling set that can pass the hours when you’re holed up in your duct tape sealed home with young children.

Now head on over to GeekMom Laura Grace’s post explaining the science behind just how the zombie virus might spread, and what you can do about it.

If you are a simplistic person and/or get most of your survival tips from The Walking Dead, GeekMom Nicole Wakelin wrote this very helpful post, called The Five Rules for the Zombie Apocalypse, that is worth a read.

I also feel a need to pass along a great comment made on yesterday’s post, by one of our fabulous GeekMom readers, Kara Marriner. She wisely noted that I had forgotten to put duct tape on the list of survival supplies. Good catch, Kara. You can never have too much duct tape. If you don’t believe me, take some time today to watch the Duct Tape Island episode of Mythbusters where Adam and Jamie survive on a deserted island, using duct tape as one of their only supplies. The video is posted below. Good tips there, my friend.

That should be enough to keep you busy for today. More tips headed your way tomorrow. And, as always, feel free to leave your own tips and suggestions in the comment section below.
