It’s an exclusive sneak peek at a documentary that our friends at Lego have put together. They had so much fun creating the Hobbit themed sets that they decided to make a life size duplicate of the set called An Unexpected Gathering. In this video you’ll see the process unfold as Lego designers decide on what scale they’ll build their model and how to make that scale translate into the finished product they desire. You might see a familiar face, if you remember the post we did about Steve Gerling, one of just a handful of Lego Master Builders.

Over the course of many weeks the pieces slowly came together, until they finally gathered to put the final touches on a life size Lego environment. The chimney has real smoke and the lights actually work. Seeing the behind the scenes action in a major Lego build is pretty exciting for any Lego loving kid or adult. Watch the documentary and see for yourself.

You can see the finished product yourself when you attend one of the Lego KidsFest events. I attended one of these events with two of my boys and it was an afternoon full of great memories. The schedule is constantly being expanded and already includes seven locations. If your local area isn’t covered yet, keep checking the website.
