Is there anything nicer than getting a package full of surprises in the mail? How about a package full of surprises in the mail once a month! I’ve noticed a growing number of monthly subscription-box services popping up lately, and it’s a trend I support wholeheartedly. I decided to check out a bunch of them and report my findings here. Up first: a box full of flavor.
Knoshbox describes itself as “a monthly subscription box for artisan food.” Let me say right off the bat that Knoshbox would make a fantastic gift for anyone on your list: the chance to sample some truly scrumptious foods from all across the country.
Sample contents: The October box had a wonderful autumn theme — quite a treat for my sunbaked SoCal family. It contained a jar of Skillet Pumpkin Sauce (from Seattle-based Skillet Street Food); some Happy Jack Pumpkin Crunch Granola and a Toasted Orchard Bar, both by Nate’s Naturals of New Haven, CT; and a package of utterly to-die-for Bacon Peanut Brittle (made by The Redhead NYC, an East Village eatery). Bacon peanut brittle. I ask you. All of the items were delicious (the apple-flavored Orchard Bar was gone five minutes after I opened the package) and we loved the opportunity to sample some truly original food.
What’s next: The November box’s theme is Bourbon: bourbon caramels, bourbon-sugar-crusted homemade marshmallows, bourbon pecan pancake mix, and bourbon pecan brownies — from artisans in Vermont, Indiana, Georgia, and Illinois. Sign up by Nov. 1 to get in on this package, or check back later in the month to see what December has in store.
Monthly subscription cost: $30. (Includes shipping.)
Gift subscriptions available? Yes — a single-box option allows you to try the service for one month, or send it to a friend. And if you fall in love with a particular item, you can order more in Knoshbox’s Market.
