Squee Alert: The Delectable Gummylamp

Ah, gummy bears. I won’t go so far as to say I have a gummy bear addiction, but, well, let’s just say I order them by the case. They’re my work food: I eat them while I write. With the possible exception of those little hamburger-shaped cookies Kristen Rutherford brings me back from her trips to Tokyo, gummy bears just might be the cutest candy there is.

Now imagine a giant gummy bear that shines in the dark. A bear made of soft, squeezable plastic that emits a gentle light from its tubby little belly. There you have the Gummylamp, a very clever novelty item by Jailbreak Collective.

Did I swoon when I saw it? You bet I swooned. So did my kids. My five-year-old (once she wrapped her head around the fact that this particular gummy bear isn’t candy) begged to go to bed at four in the afternoon because she was so eager to use the Gummylamp as a nightlight). When bedtime finally arrived, she lay grinning in the bear’s friendly green glow. (The Gummylamp comes in all the traditional flavors colors: green, red, yellow, orange, and clear.)

The lamp is powered by two AA batteries, or you can use the DC to USB cord that comes included. A firm squeeze of the bear’s tummy turns the light on and off. (The squeezing is half the fun.) The bear is seven inches tall and fits nicely on a shelf or bedside table; there’s also an indentation in its back for wall-mounting. An especially nice feature is that it has an hour-long sleep timer. This gives a whole new meaning to sweet dreams.

We also got a big kick out of the “nutritional facts” on the back of the package.
