September 24 is Museum Day!

Later this month, on Saturday, September 24, hundreds of Smithsonian Museum affiliates throughout the country will be participating in a “free admission” museum day event. Before you start promising freeze-dried gift shop ice cream for everyoooone! however, understand: the day is “free” for up to two members of a household. After that, regular admission charges apply.

To find out which museums are participating in Museum Day in your region, you can check out the affiliate list–it includes art museums, science museums, nature centers, historic societies, transit museums…and more (the National Museum of Dentistry is in Baltimore, Maryland…who knew?). Once you’ve chosen a specific museum, just head over to the Smithsonian “museum day” webpage and fill out a “free ticket for two” request form. Your ticket will be emailed to you but you’ll have to print it out and bring it with you on the day of your visit.

Common sense rules apply:

  • The ticket is not valid for special exhibits, parking, IMAX film screenings or for use with any other offers.
  • One Museum Day Ticket per household, per valid email address is allowed. The Museum Day Ticket will be collected upon entry.
  • If museum reaches capacity, a museum has the right to limit the number of guests until space becomes available.
