Watermelon Art That’s Clever and Yummy!

Although the rest of the country got out of school a month ago, we finally had our last day, here in New York, last week. So finally, finally, it’s summer! And what says summer better than watermelon? Well, maybe popsicles and lawn sprinklers — but watermelon’s a close third.

So what clever things can hip geekmoms do with watermelons? So glad you asked! I stumbled upon a unique website recently, sponsored by the National Watermelon Promotion Board (who knew?). I thought I was familiar with the basic ways to carve a watermelon but boy, was I under informed.

The National Watermelon people sure know how to inspire a girl. Their designs made even this doesn’t-much-care-for-the-taste-of-watermelon mom want to run out and buy a few of the round delights.

You can decide for yourself, which ones strike your fancy, but let me offer a few suggestions.

You can use the quills as serving tools!

The website offers very clear instructions on how to carve these masterpieces, and has lots of pictures to inspire the inner fruit artist in all of us. So sharpen those carving knives and pick up a watermelon or two the next time you’re at the grocery store or farmer’s market. These designs will be as much fun to make (a great “Mom..I’m bored!” activity) as they will be to share.
