Breakfast Pastries From Home

Imagine, homemade breakfast pastries!

When I was a kid, I was always jealous of other kids who had Pop-Tarts packed lovingly in their lunchboxes, or, who bragged about eating them for breakfast. When I left home, they were one of the first things I purchased in bulk (frosted cinnamon!) and ate on the go while attending university. Now, I’m much more concerned about how healthful foods are, and about my ability to pronounce their ingredients. I understand now why my mother didn’t include them in my lunchbox, that, and we couldn’t really afford them.

But I still love the idea of a portable pastry, and was delighted to see The Kitchen review a recipe from Joanne Chang’s cookbook titled, simply, Flour. This book is on my holiday shopping list, because I love baking, and because it features a homemade breakfast pastry recipe. I can pronounce all the ingredients, and even the pastry, which can sometimes be tricky, looks a cinch. Will it be the same without the crinkly, space-aged foil packet? Maybe not, but you can personalize some aluminum foil with a Sharpie, or, for the die hard GeekMoms, enclose them in anti-static pouches. Omnomnom.
