A Surprising Easter Egg

Easter baskets were not something I grew up with in the UK. We didn’t hunt eggs in the Midlands in the 1980s. And while we did consume a vast quantity of oversized chocolate eggs, it wasn’t until I married an American that Easter became an extravaganza!

Before the pandemic we would travel to a church or community center and scramble with 200 other children to collect plastic eggs in a wide variety of colors, filled with a wide variety of candy. During the pandemic, we switched to an egg hunt in our back garden, assigning levels of difficulty to age, different colors to different children, and filled with a ridiculous amount of jelly beans. After the pandemic madness wound down, our kids opted to continue our homespun tradition. So this weekend I will be hiding those plastic eggs full of Jelly Beans again, but this year I will be hiding something else.

I have not had much luck over the years replacing my kids’ advent chocolates with anything but chocolate. The Lego figures were rejected, the miniature Funkos were accepted but only alongside chocolates!

But this year amongst the Jelly Beans will be hidden 12 purple eggs full of sand not sugar!

My kids have loved Kinetic sand for a long time, and have continued to handle it well into their teen years. So I was very excited to discover these eggs. You can get packs of 12 and 20, and each egg contains 2.64oz of red, yellow, or blue colored sand. Kids can squish and mix up the various colors from this kit to make new colors and then continue to store the sand in the egg containers for a quick clean up and easy storage. You can keep all the eggs in the carton, or your own egg carton of choice. Ours will ultimately find a home in a thrifted egg caddy.

For those not yet familiar with Kinetic Sand, prepare for your next fun pastime. Kinetic Sand is the original moldable play sand. This sensory sand never dries out like modeling clay, but has the same tactile experience with less mess. As an adult it is incredibly satisfying to play with, as a child it is captivating.

Next year I may fill the eggs with other things, I feel very emboldened and inspired by the Kinetic Sand Eggs. However since this year I am not diluting the amount of chocolates and candy, but adding in another favorite substances of theirs, I cannot wait to see the looks on their faces when sand emerges from their eggs.
