There can’t be many books that capture the essence of GeekDad more than Nosy Crow’s How to Launch a Tech Start-Up. It’s an infographic-style picture book that offers insight and information for younger readers with ambitions of entering robotics, gaming, or any number of other tech industries.
What Is How to Launch a Tech Start-Up?
This is the 6th book in the How to Be a… series, with Astronaut, Footballer, Vet, Doctor, and Detective having been visited previously. This book uses the same illustrator, Sol Linero, as the others in the series and is written by tech entrepreneur Michelle You.
Perhaps unsurprisingly the book doesn’t focus solely on tech start-ups. It’s more a discussion of IT careers and the different pathways into the industry, as well as an explanation of the myriad ways technology intersects with our lives.
How to Launch a Tech Start-Up is a 32-page picture book filled with vibrant illustrations. It would suit readers aged around 7 years upwards. It includes some general information about how start-ups are created, from the ideas phase through to funding and then implementation. It also includes notes on the importance of reiteration and acknowledges the fact that many start-ups fail.
Beyond that, the book discusses the types of technology that might be needed in the future, such as AI, gaming, green industries, and medicine.
There are no notes on what to do if your child becomes a free speech absolutist.
Why Read How to Launch a Tech Start-Up?
This is a great entry-level book for inquisitive minds. It won’t teach anybody how to become a tech billionaire, but it might inspire readers to think about what a career in technology might look like. It will help them think of technology as something beyond the small device they hold in their hand.
The book is well laid out and gives a great overview of the different facets of working in the tech industry. Of course, by the time the intended audience of this book has reached the age of looking for jobs or starting their own business, the tech world will have no doubt moved on again. Nevertheless, the principles outlined and the book’s portrayal of the excitement of working in a cutting-edge environment may well spark future entrepreneurs looking for the next great technological revolution.
