30 Day Challenge: Embroidery by Jessica Anderson (Author)
When the blasted pandemic hit, I dimly remembered how to embroider from my elementary school years.
When embroidery presented itself as an alternative to pass the time, I started from scratch, and have never looked back: it is something to do with your hands, to keep yourself occupied, that helps you be present and thus mindful, and that gives you the biggest gift of all, the chance to regale others with hand-made little things.
This book, 30 Day Challenge: Embroidery, is a great place to start this journey.
I initially thought that embroidery was a hard craft that needed tons of equipment and could not be easily learned. And I was wrong! You can embroider almost anywhere, and it is truly affordable. You can start with thread, a needle, any old piece of cloth you have lying around the house, and an embroidery hoop. (You get fancier, but we will have that conversation once you’re hooked).
This book is set as a challenge, and it is perfect for beginners. The dozens of embroidery stitches taught are more easily attainable, and they will make the foundation for more overly complex stitches in the future.
Moreover, you can use them to create 30 simple projects that will be ready for display and can be completed in a couple of days or less.
After an overview of embroidery basics, Jessica Anderson has designed one new stitch and one embroidery design that features that stitch, each day for 30 days.
The motifs are easy and fun. Flowers, birds, houseplants, rainbows, and boots are made with our tendency to approach embroidery in mind: a couple of free hours, evolving to combine multiple stitches over time.
You can either follow the projects from more simple to more complex or follow your schedule and pick and choose.
By the time you’re done, the collection of projects will truly become a documented journey into creativity.
Jessica Anderson is an avid crafter and embroidery artist. She shares creative ideas on her blog, Cutesy Crafts, and has taught thousands of people to embroider through her YouTube channel. She lives in Sacramento, California.
