DC Comics’ ‘Girl Power Brain Boosters’ Is a Retro Romp for All Ages

From graphic novels to picture books to Little Golden Books, it’s a good time to be a young fan of some of DC Comics’ most recognizable superheroes.

DC and Downtown Bookworks pay extra attention to the women heroes of the DC universe, and their dedication to sharing their stories and personalities is remarkable. The latest activity book from the two is Girl Power Brain Boosters. Packed with puzzles, word games, art and writing prompts, and much more, along with a gloriously retro comic book style that includes both the Golden and Silver Ages of comics, this is fantastic activity book for DC fans of all ages. I might just keep it for myself!

Batgirl, Wonder Woman, and Supergirl are joined by some lesser known heroes like Zatanna, Katana, Raven, and Mary Marvel, along with old pals Superman and Batman. There are absolutely male characters included, if you were wondering, and while it should go without saying, this book is perfectly perfect for either boys or girls who love superheroes.

Which is just about all of them.

All of the heroes are illustrated in an old school style that reminds me of first finding the characters when I was little. Zatanna and Supergirl rock their old school 80s costumes, and the Golden Age Wonder Woman had my daughter doing a double take. (“That’s what she looked like?”) [Note: GeekMom Corrina believes the artist is the great José Luis García-López, whose art is used for most of DC’s marketing.]

As for the activities themselves, they were challenging enough to make my ten-year-old pause and work those brain cells. The “compare these pictures” pages were surprisingly detailed (one even had me stumped for a bit!), secret codes, mazes, crosswords, even a rhyming game really will make your kiddos think.

If you’re looking for a birthday or holiday gift for a kid in your life who can’t get enough of super heroes, you can’t go wrong with Girl Power Brain Boosters. And once DC Super Hero Girls hits the Cartoon Network, this book will be even more in demand! Grab this book when you need to save the day with a quick gift.
