The Assassination of Brangwain Spurge Image: Candlewick Press
The Assassination of Brangwain Spurge reminds me of the whimsy of Tolkien and the humor of Monty Python with its hijinks.
Brangwain is a snobbish, upstart of a character that I’m learning to like less and less as his attitude seems to just cause problems for Werfel. Despite doing everything he can to please and give hospitality to Brangwain, Brangwain does nothing but act superior towards Werfel. Hello! You’re there to be diplomatic!! This attitude ends up causing the very problems he’s there to avoid and it just spirals out of control from there. Thankfully Werfel sees the problems his guest is causing, but I guess you could say they are in this one together. Kind of like a goblin/elf version of the odd couple.
Without giving away any spoilers, I’ll just say it’s easily becoming a book I can’t put down. The occasional “secret transmission” chapters are a nice break from the reading and give you a visual break with wonderful artwork to feast your eyes on.
It’s worth taking your time to really study these transmissions and look at the details. The artist did a beautiful job conveying the messages.
