A sequel of sorts to Ted Alspach’s Suburbia, Castles of Mad King Ludwig is a tile-laying game in which players must build an extravagant castle for King Ludwig II of Bavaria—all a single room at a time. Players take on the role of contractors at the king’s whim, tasked with adding rooms to the structure, buying and selling services with other players, and attempting to reap the benefits of getting in the king’s good graces. This drop features the base game and the Secrets Expansion, which adds 30 rooms, moats, favors, and the coveted swans that the king adores. Also included is Palace of Mad King Ludwig: a standalone game with similarities to the original, this time with no auction and a clever timer that builds pressure for players as the moat slowly closes in around the palace. It also puts a fun spin on resource management.
