‘The Viscount and the Vicar’s Daughter’: A Charming Victorian Romance

Mimi Mathews has done it again with her latest charming and clean romantic story about two lovers from opposite ends of society.

The Viscount and the Vicar’s Daughter takes us into the world of St. Ashton and Ms. Valentine March. St. Ashton is the worst of all rakes, he says it himself. Ms. Valentine March is the daughter of a recently deceased vicar. During a chance meeting at a party in the country, the two unlikely lovers realize there’s more to each other than meets the eye.

The secrets of Valentine March’s birth, St. Ashton’s affliction with love at first sight, and a society up in arms over the most dishonorable man and his latest conquest make this a fun evening of a read.

Mimi’s descriptions of the characters and setting make it easy to see and almost envision myself in their presence. Some writers just drop this information on the readers as if to get it out of the way. Mimi, however, twists it into the story and lets you take your time seeing the sights and the people as they come into view with satisfying clarity.

Just like her last book, The Lost Letter: A Victorian Romance, my only complaint here is that the story is too short. Everything plays out rather quickly and with hardly any backstory. At one point, I realized how many pages I had left until the resolution and realized just how fast it would all wrap up.

On the upside, at 220 pages, the story is short enough that you can read it in an evening over a cup of hot tea and some biscuits.

If you are looking for some Victorian age storytelling with a charming romance without the lustful details, Mimi Mathews delivers in The Viscount and the Vicar’s Daughter.
