Purple Cow Crazy Scientist Lab – Science at the Ready

Purple Cow Young Survivor Image: Purple Cow

Purple Cow Crazy Scientist Lab is a tin full of scientific fun. Each kit is themed to an area of science that anyone ages 6 to 99 will enjoy doing. My son goes to school via the virtual platform so I enjoyed having this on hand to supplement his lessons.

Each kit contains the key components needed for a handful of experiments. The items themselves are not expensive to buy on their own but it’s nice to have them in a ready-to-go kit for when your scientist wants to do some experimentation.

Here’s what’s inside. Image: Dakster Sullivan

In the Young Survivor kit, you get the materials to make over a dozen experiments including:

  • Gravel
  • Sand
  • Sundial
  • Magnifying glass
  • Ceramic magnet
  • Rope
  • Wooden stick
  • Needle + thread
  • Beeds
  • Solar stove cut-out

Not everything you need is included because they count on you having things like aluminum foil and plastic baggies as part of your standard household items. For the most part, when we would flip to an experiment we could do it with what we had on hand.

The Experiments

The Young Survivor kit is exactly what it sounds like. It’s a kit full of experiments that cover purifying water, distilling water, pulling water from plants for drinking, starting a fire without matches (and starting a fire with water), building a solar stove, using a sundial as a compass, building a compass, and for extra fun they have instructions on building a Morse Code bracelet.

The experiments don’t take long to complete and after looking over the instructions, I’m confident that the average 8-year-old could do the experiments with proper supervision.

Other kits available include:

  • Bubbles and Foam
  • Color Laboratory
  • Magical Mirrors
  • Optical Illusions
  • Water and Gel Science
  • Young Detectives

Each kit is sold separately and ranges from $13 to $20 on Amazon.
