There are just so many things to love about The Princess Bride. If you enter any geeky community, you will no doubt bump into lines from the beloved movie being repeated by every generation. Even my 6-year-old knows where the question “Anybody want a peanut?” comes from. Practically every time a sparring sword (or even a lightsaber) is drawn in an action sequence, you can bet someone will declare, “My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die!”
This love story with film fans began thirty years ago with Westley losing, loving, and winning his true love Buttercup. Rob Reiner’s film adaptation of William Goldman’s 1973 novel was met with modest initial success, but it has come to be a true classic. It is really funny, too. In 2000, readers of Total Film magazine voted The Princess Bride the 38th greatest comedy film of all time. The movie has a solid 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, even without a spell brewed by Max and Valerie.
Swept up in the passions of their rekindled true love, Westley (Cary Elwes) and Buttercup (Robin Wright) encounter great obstacles—giants, fire swamps, rodents of unusual size—to be together in an epic tale that a grandfather (Peter Falk) reads to his grandson (Fred Savage). The greatest obstacle of all? Despicable Prince Humperdinck (Chris Sarandon), set on making Buttercup his wife to wage war on his enemies. The lovers seek help from Fezzik (André the Giant), a gentle giant with a knack for rhyming, and Inigo Montoya (Mandy Patinkin), a skilled swordsman dedicated to the revenge business. In this hilariously epic adventure, the lengths Westley and Buttercup must go for true love are indeed “inconceivable”… and unforgettable.
