‘Battle Cats’ by Mad Cave Studios

Battle Cats Art by Mad Dog Studios

One of the best things to come out of my MegaCon 2017 experience was meeting various indie authors, publishers, and makers. One of those was Mad Cave Studios and their series, Battle Cats.

Husband: Since when are you a cat person?
Me: Since they looked this badass.

The best way to describe Battle Cats is a He-Man meets Thundercats. Issue #0 covers the creation of the world of Valderian and how the title Warriors were to come to be. There are some biblical references to a God of Creation, evolution, and eventually kings and prophets. The young cub that is hearing the story of the first kings is a curious one and even questions the one telling him of the events. I’m interested to see where his character goes in future issues.

The art and story go well together but thanks to some decapitations, I have to say this first issue makes it for teens and not kids.

The one thing that threw my husband and I off when we read it was the sudden appearance of canines. There aren’t many of them, but the God of Creation is clearly feline and the first of his seed are feline, so the appearance of members of the canine family kind of confused us both.

At the end of the issue, we had a nice taste of what Battle Cats was about and it was good enough to have us wanting more. We plan on picking up the next three issues from Comixology. If you want the full experience while reading, check out the soundtrack over on iTunes.

Issue #0 is available for free over at Mad Cave Studios website and is written by Mark London with art by Andy King and Julian Gonzalez.
