Grisham’s ‘Theodore Boone’ Series: Legal Thrillers for the Younger Audience

I don’t know about you guys, but I spent most summers in the ’90s devouring books from certain big-name authors like Stephen King, Dean Koontz, James Patterson… and John Grisham.

One summer, I consumed everything by Grisham that I could get my hands on:

A Time to Kill.

The Firm.

The Client.

The Pelican Brief.

I could go on and on and on.

Gone are the summer days when I could while away the hours reading everything ever written by an author. As a mother to three little people, I’m lucky if I can finish a chapter without interruption, let alone a series!

But did you know that John Grisham has written a legal thriller series for young adults?

*Disclosure: I received Grisham’s Theodore Boone series at no cost. I was not required to write a review and, as always, all opinions are my own.

Grisham’s Theodore Boone series features Theo Boone. Theo will remind those… um… more seasoned Grisham readers of Doogie Howser, except Theo is the Doogie Howser of the courtroom. Theo is the 13-year-old law-obsessed son of two lawyers. He grew up in and around the courtroom. Theo knows everyone and has big dreams of becoming a lawyer. He even has a dog named Judge!

In the first book, Theodore Boone: Kid Lawyer, Theo finds himself in the middle of a highly-publicized murder trial. I won’t give it away, but let’s just say that Theo finds himself privy to some crucial information about the case.

This #1 New York Times bestselling series for young adults is now up to six books. Boone is adored by his young readers and parents appreciate the fact that their children are learning some legal basics. Reminiscent of the Grisham you read in the ’90s, but without the not-safe-for-kids stuff,  Theodore Boone is an action-packed and suspense-filled legal thriller series for a younger audience… and a perfect summer read!
