Tabletop Game: ‘Roll for It!’

Roll for It! is a straightforward dice-and-cards game which has so few rules that it can be taught in seconds. Players get six dice, which they roll on their turn. They may then place their dice next to one of the available score cards. When they match all of the dice on the card, they claim the card as their own, scoring points. The first player to 40 points wins. Easy enough, yes?

The first time we played, I was pleasantly surprised to see how small the box was. Too many games make their boxes too large. Inside the box were 24 dice and 30 cards. The pieces are all high quality and beautiful. The cards are brightly colored, making it easy to see how many points your opponents have.

Next I found that there’s quite a bit of strategy involved. See, once a die is placed, it cannot be moved. If a player invests their dice poorly, their only choice is to pick all of their dice up and roll them all again. The player cannot choose which dice they collect. It’s all or nothing. This means that previous turns can have been wasted.

The hardest cards to claim are worth 15 points, but require all six dice. Betting on those cards can pay off big or cut your options down to nearly nothing. On the other hand, the easiest cards to claim are only worth two points. Players must decide how to proceed as the cards change.

Each game plays up to 4, but if you combine both games (Red and Purple), you can play up to 8. Gameplay stays the same, except that there are 4 cards in the pool instead of 3.

Roll for It! is the perfect game for handing to your kids, or pulling out at a party. Play can take between 10 and 40 minutes, depending on the players.

At a paltry price of under $12 each, Roll for It! is a great gift or investment for the gamer with a budget. Its size and re-playability also make it a great candidate for folks without much space to spare.
