Shaving Made Cheap with the Dollar Shave Club

Dollar Shave – Before and After Image: Dakster Sullivan

Razors can be expensive. Scratch that. They are expensive. To cut down on the cost, my husband and I actually share one and thankfully we’ve found a blade that works for both of us and it doesn’t cost an-arm-and-a-leg to replace.

We previously used the Gillette MACH3 razor. The handle with two spare blades cost $17.00. The refills cost around $15 for five replacement blades. Buying the blades was just as painful as cutting yourself with one while shaving.

Enter the Dollar Shave Club.

We’ve covered subscription boxes before on GeekMom, but this one is unique because it’s the cheapest of the bunch. For as little as $4 a month, you get your handle and blades delivered to your house.

Here’s how it works:

You pick out one of three blade types on Dollar Shave’s website. They ship you the handle and your first set of blades the first month. Every month following, they will send you a fresh set of replacement blades.

Not all razors are for everyone, and Dollar Shave has three unique blades to choose from:

The Humble Twin: This is a basic shaver with two stainless steel blades. You get five cartridges for $1 plus shipping and handling.

The 4X: Four stainless steel blades arrive in a four cartridge package every month.  The cost is $4 per month (shipping and handling is included).

The Executive: Six stainless steel blades and a trimmer edge come in a four cartridge pack every month. The cost is $9 per month (shipping and handling is included).

If you’re unsure which blade to start with, pick the one you feel is the right fit and try it out. If it doesn’t work out, you can change your subscription or cancel it at any time.

I’ll admit before trying the razors I was a bit skeptical as to how well they work. As the saying goes, “You get what you pay for” right? Not in this case. As you can see in the first image, on the left is before my husband shaved and  on the right is how he looked after shaving with The 4X blade. Upon closer inspection, I found his skin to be as silky smooth as it appeared.

In addition to the blades, you can also subscribe to receive their special body shave butter ($8) or flushable, soothing aloe butt wipes ($4). I can’t tell a difference when I use the Shave Butter over my usual shower gel, so I’m skipping on that subscription for now. It has a strong eucalyptus scent though, so if that’s your thing, give it a try.

So let’s do some math here.

Gillete costs $17 plus $15 for the handle and five blades. At its most expensive, the Dollar Shave Club costs $9 and that includes the handle and four spare cartridges. Overall, I’d say Dollar Shave is the way to go.
