The Geek Mom Book: Our Views on Education

To help celebrate the publication of Geek Mom: Projects, Tips, and Adventures for Moms and Their 21st-Century Families, out today, I wanted to talk about another one of the chapters, our chapter on education.

Education and learning are ubiquitous in my life, and in the lives of many geeks. I have always enjoyed learning, even outside of school. Then when I got to the place where I was considering children, I looked into homeschooling. I immediately knew it was a good fit for me. Being so involved in the education of my own children, and getting to spend much of my time learning along with them, felt like a wonderful and valuable way to spend my time.

Now, in practice, I work to expose my kids to as many different subjects as possible. This kind of attitude of “learning = good” is shared by geeks everywhere, and it is a running theme in our new book.

In our education chapter, we talk about many ways to make education more fun and engaging for your kids. One of the best ways to do that is to find hands-on things that parents and kids can do together. There is learning in every day life, and learning in play. Conventional games, role playing, and educational activities all help kids learn by doing. Education isn’t and shouldn’t be restricted to school hours. The Geek Mom book will help you and your kids get off the ground with role playing games, learning about history, and making custom maps together, among many other ideas. It’s available in stores starting today!
