All Aboard the Dinosaur Train!

My daughter is a huge fan of Dinosaur Train on PBS Kids.  When we were offered the opportunity to have a sneak peak of Dinosaur Big City, the new one-hour Dinosaur Train movie airing on August 22, 2011, we jumped at the chance.

Movie Synopsis (from PBS Kids)

Buddy and his Pteranodon family embark on a journey on the Dinosaur Train, gathering all their theropod friends together to travel to a really big Theropod Club Convention, which is being held in Laramidia, the “Dinosaur Big City.”  Among the travelers is King Cryolophosaurus, a singing theropod who is more than a little nervous about giving a concert in front of his biggest audience ever in the Big City.  Once the Dinosaur Train arrives in Laramidia, Buddy and the Pteranodon family explore the crowded “dinosaur metropolis.” At the Theropod Convention, the kids reunite with Annie Tyrannosaurus and her parents Delores and Boris, and they all meet the multi-horned mayor, Mayor Kosmoceratops.  In the end, Buddy and Tiny help King Cryolophosaurus overcome his stage fright, and he wows a large dinosaur audience when he sings his new song, “Whole Lotta Theropods” at the Convention.

We really enjoyed watching Dinosaur Big City. The songs in the movie are a nice touch.  King Cryolophosaurus is a funny character and we loved how Buddy and Tiny help him overcome his fears.  We love Buddy and the Pteranodon family as well as the overall message of the show about families (and dinosaurs) coming in many shapes and sizes and all having different talents and abilities.  She loves all the facts about dinosaurs.  The show does have scientific advisers and does a really good job of bringing science and history to life in a way that kids love.  Dinosaur Train is brought to us by the Jim Henson Company and is aimed at the preschool set, though we know plenty of kids in K-3 that love it as well.

Dinosaur Big City kicks off Season II of Dinosaur Train. It airs on August 22, 2011, on PBS Kids (check your local listings).  The movie will also be released on DVD on August 23 by Paramount Home Entertainment.  The DVD includes the Dinosaur Big City movie and four bonus episodes which are also very cute as Buddy and the Pteranodon family continue to have adventures aboard the dinosaur train.

Even though we’ve already seen it, we’ll be tuning in on August 22 to see Dinosaur Big City and are looking forward to Season II of the show.
