National Dungeons & Dragons Day – Saturday, May 18, 2019

Games

Okay, so who here is into Dungeons and Dragons? And who here is interested but not sure how to enter the world of DnD? Yeah; me, too. I want to gradually lower myself into the water rather than cannonball right in there. The thing is, it’s really hard to learn about DnD unless you know someone already in there. I know there are places around that offer ‘Intro Days’ but it can be hard to find the details and even more daunting to turn up. What we really need is a National Day of Dungeons & Dragons. Maybe an International Day…

Hey! Look at that! Good Games Australia beat me to it. 😛

Good Games is a major game store chain in Australia, who specializes in all things tabletop. They also include many workshops for Magic: The Gathering, Pokemon TCG, and of course DnD (to name a few). I’ll be honest: They’re my go-to for gaming.

However, last time we turned up for a workshop on DnD, we were overwhelmed with information and underwhelmed with assistance. The majority of their players were all set up and ready to go. My kids and I had no idea what was going on. We bought a book to read and went home. *sad face*

Fortunately, I think Good Games was aware of this and have come up with a way to bring in the noobs like me for an introductory day. Good Games have teamed up with Wizards Australia and podcasts I Speak Giant and 7LandHand to introduce a National Dungeons & Dragons Day.

On Saturday, May 18, 2019, Good Games stores around Australia are going to throw open their doors and welcome all the DnD noobs to a free workshop on how to start your new life!! If you are into gaming but never really got the hang of DnD, then today is your day!

There is even a starter pack for each new participant! All new adventurers will receive their own miniature (with its own stats sheet) as well as guidance on how to paint it. This is a HUGE thing for me: guidance. Already you have won me over. Of course, you don’t have to be this particular character forever and ever, ad nauseam. The point is to introduce you to DnD and give you a basic understanding of how to play a full game or campaign.

Speaking of the start, you will also be introduced to your first adventure! Take your character and bring them to life. Over two hours, each store will be running beginner-level campaigns for all new participants to join in. Yes, you can use your brand new character in a game/story perfect for beginners. You’ll have experienced DnD players in-store ready to step you through the process. This is another bonus point for me because the in-store helpers are fully aware this is ‘Noob Day’. And at the end of the game, each player will receive a voucher to collect your own dice bag at the next in-store DnD game.

Now, a quick little disclaimer. This is happening in Australia. However, in saying that, there is NOTHING stopping other stores around the world to celebrate Dungeons & Dragons Day too! Good Games, I Speak Giant, and 7LandHand have done an amazing job setting this up as a National Day–I would LOVE to see this become an International thing. *nudge nudge, wink wink*

If you want to hear more about what is planned for the day, check out the podcast episode with I Speak Giant. You can also check out the official website here. And of course, if you do take it upon yourself to join in the DnD fun, share some pics with us on social media: #geekmom and #DnDAU

    1. Yeah, I saw the Wikipedia article. However, it started in 2004 and the last record I can find of any further activities was 2008. Given that was over 10-years ago, I think it is fair to say the original idea is dead and Good Games is now rolling for a revival spell. Good for them.
