The Enchanted Sonata by Heather Dixon Wallwork is a lovely tale that takes The Nutcracker and Pied Piper stories and meshes them together for an enchanting story. We have a heroine who has a little growing up to do and a prince who has a lot to learn about his future, and their lives become intertwined after the musical magician weaves his way into their worlds.
Coming in at around 375 pages, we get to learn all about 15-year-old Clara Stahlbaum and her plans to marry her crush, the handsome pianist Johann Kahler. Things go astray, though, when Clara is sent a magical book and a nutcracker toy the eve of her big piano recital.
The story tells of a prince and his kingdom as they are under attack by a strange visitor while being pummeled by their nemesis rat neighbors.
After being sucked into the pages along with the now life-sized Nutcracker, Clara and Nutcracker (as he prefers to be called) must save the kingdom in 24 hours or a magician who uses music will win and Clara will be more than a little disappointed at missing the recital of her life.
It comes as a surprise to everyone when Clara turns out to have the key to saving the kingdom, if only she had the right musical spell to do it.
While on the journey, Clara starts to face that the future she had all planned out might not be the future she truly wants.
The story has heart along with a few lessons about anger, forgiveness, and letting go.
