One of the most common questions for people hoping to get into comics is where to start. That’s a complicated question for any fan to answer. Do you start with the Big 2, trying to find good entry points into character arcs that have gone on, sometimes, for half a century? Do you look for great indie comics, trying to find the right mix of art and topic to engage someone’s interests? Do you find a combination of the two and hope for the best? Humble Bundle and the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund (CBLDF) have just made that question a little bit easier to answer.

The pair have announced a bundle that offers a selection of modern and classic comics that can take a reader through comics history and offer a great starting point to figure out what you like, what you’re interested in, and what you want more of. Publishers include all of the major players on the comic book scene: Boom!, Dark Horse, Dynamite, IDW, Image, Titan Publishing Group, and more. These comics come from North America, Japan, and Europe. Titles range from Bob’s Burgers to Locke & Key. The Bundle will be available through March 1st, 2019, 10:00am PST.

Many of the books offered in this collaboration between Humble Bundle and CBLDF are volume one of a longer series. This gives new fans a great way to sample a series and see if they’re interested in reading more. Many of the included books are parts of longer series—for example, Saga is now on its 9th volume. And at the highest donation tier, you’re still only paying slightly more than you might for a single trade paperback new—and you’re getting more than 40 volumes of comics.

Beyond the benefits of building a great library of comics in a single click, supporting the Humble Bundle means supporting the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. This non-profit organization responds to threats of censorship by monitoring legislation and challenge laws that would impede First Amendment rights. They also create resources which promote an understanding of comics, and partner in the Kids’ Right To Read project and Banned Books Week.

Renowned author and CBLDF Advisory Board chair Neil Gaiman says, “Thanks to the support of the Humble Bundle community, CBLDF is realizing our long-term goals of creating new legal support for creators at risk domestically and around the world. We’re building more resources to help students, educators, and librarians use comics in education, and defending their Free Expression rights—all at no cost to those who need our help.”

Alison Bechdel, author of Fun Home, says, “CBLDF has gone to bat for my readers and fellow artists time and again over the years. Thanks to their support, books like Fun Home are available to readers who wouldn’t otherwise see themselves in their community’s libraries. Thank you, Humble Bundle community for supporting their work!”

Purchasing all of the comics in the Humble Bundle individually would cost around $580. Instead, for donating as much as $20, customers can get comics like:

  • Plants vs. Zombies: Timepocalypse
  • Judge Dredd Vol. 1
  • Wynonna Earp, Vol. 1: Homecoming
  • Bloom County: The Complete Digital Library Vol. 1
  • Inuyashiki Vol. 1
  • The Wonderful World of Tank Girl
  • Saga Vol. 1
  • Attack on Titan Vol. 1
  • The Complete Elfquest Volume 1: The Original Quest
  • Locke & Key Vol. 1: Welcome To Lovecraft
  • Criminal Vol. 1
  • Hip Hop Family Tree Vol. 1
  • Monstress Vol. 1

and many more. For myself, I’d get my money’s worth just by picking up Wynonna Earp (I love the TV show and can’t wait to see what the comic is like) and Attack on Titan (which all of my friends keep recommending, but only if I bring tissues).

Get some new comics for yourself, or send the bundle to a friend who has been wondering where to start in comics. There will be something here that they love. The bundle will be available from February 13th, 2019, to March 1st, 2019, 10:00am PST.
