The day before Thanksgiving, as the family was baking pies and cleaning house, I brought up a stack of picture books. A few of us picked a book to read on camera while the rest listened and enjoyed good (and silly) stories with bright, colorful art. We were all a bit tired from the day’s activities, and having fun with picture books was the perfect way for everyone to relax. You can watch these with your child to see if there is a book you might want to add to your own collection, or simply watch my family enjoy the read-aloud.

Hello, Paris! by Christopher Franceschelli and Geraldine Cosneau

But Not the Armadillo by Sandra Boynton

1 male, 1 female, and lots of neutral gender characters.

Monster Boogie by Laurie Berkner

Mostly neutral gender characters, with one boy and one girl. Diversity: yes, they both have brown skin.

Hello, New York! by Christopher Franceschelli, illustrated by Geraldine Cosneau

50% female characters. Diversity: Yes, a variety of skin tones.

A Dog Named Doug by Matt Myers

11 male/4 female/8 gender-neutral characters. Diversity: Yes, some dark skin tones (including a black female president).

I Feel Teal by Lauren Rille and Aimee Sicuro

50% female characters. Diversity: There are no skin tones because of the point of the book with color, but there are a variety of features that suggest different ethnicities.

Super Manny Cleans Up! by Kelly DiPucchio and Stephanie Graegin

25 male/31 female/17 gender-neutral characters.

Thanks to Ayla, Thea, Bridgit, Sarah, and Luke for volunteering to read on camera. Hope we can do it again soon!
