Geek Culture Conventions

Our headliner in the Convention Connection for week 48 2018 is Louisville SuperCon, held from Friday, November 30 through Sunday, December 2 in Louisville, Kentucky. This is the first year that the SuperCon expands to Louisville, bringing three days of celebrity and creator guests—such as Barry Bostwick, LeVar Burton, John De Lancie, Richard Dreyfuss, Sean Gunn, Lloyd Kaufman, Henry Winkler, Kevin Conroy, Vic Mignogna, Alan Oppenheimer, Sgt. Slaughter, Neal Adams, Mark Bagley, Larry Elmore, Ed McGuinness, and many more.

In addition to celebrity panels, autographs, and photo ops, the event features a number of additional panels and workshops, video gaming, tabletop gaming, and cosplay. During the convention, Super Geek Film Festival will be screening more than 37 hours of programming. In addition to the film festival, Louisville SuperCon is hosting a screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show hosted by Barry Bostwick and Patricia Quinn. Cosplay competitions and performances are scheduled for all three days of the convention.

A number of events are scheduled Friday and Saturday nights after the exhibition floor closes. The Nerd ’90s Prom begins at 9:00 p.m. Friday evening, with the Friday Night After Party running from 10:00 p.m. until 1:00 a.m. Saturday night, SuperCon hosts the SuperCon Sithmas Party beginning at 10:00 p.m.

GeekDad will be hosting a panel on Saturday, December 1 at 12:15 p.m. Come on out and join us as GeekDad contributors Joey Mills and Gerry Tolbert talk about raising generation 2.0 and how to get the most out of starting or continuing your family game nights.

Earlier this month, I had the opportunity to speak with author, publisher, panelist, and mentor Phil McCall, a frequent participant in SuperCon events over the past decade. Audio of that interview—originally published as a bonus episode of the Pop Goes the Culture podcast—is available to listen to at the end of this article. In our discussion, Phil paints a picture of what attendees might expect at Louisville SuperCon, with this being the event’s first time in the city.

Heading out to a convention this weekend?

We’d love to see your photos (especially your cosplay photos). When you upload your convention photos to social media this weekend, tag @GeekDads on Twitter and GeekDad on Facebook and use #ConConnect. With your permission, we just might share your photos on our social media accounts.

Are you a convention organizer who would like your con featured in an upcoming Convention Connection?

E-mail joey@geekdad.com at least two weeks before the convention’s start date with details you would like shared with our readers. Submission of details does not guarantee that we’ll highlight your convention, but it certainly helps your chances. If you are willing to participate in an online or phone interview promoting your convention, we can arrange an interview no later than one week prior to the convention start date. Audio interviews will be included in future Convention Connections.

Are you a convention organizer who would like your con attended and covered by GeekDad?

E-mail joey@geekdad.com at least two months before the convention’s start date with details. Submission of details does not guarantee that we’ll cover your convention, but it certainly helps your chances. Coverage depends on contributor availability for the convention. If you are willing to assist with travel and lodging for a GeekDad contributor covering your convention, please note that in the e-mail.

Are you a convention organizer who would like to give away entry to your convention (tickets, badges, etc.) on GeekDad?

Contact joey@geekdad.com at least one month before first date with ticket giveaway details. Submission of details does not guarantee that we’ll run a giveaway for entry to your convention, but it certainly helps your chances.

Final Thought

There is no way we can cover every convention every weekend. If there is a convention not covered above that you plan to attend this weekend, feel free to post the name of the convention, dates, location, and link to the convention’s website in the comments below.
