CKO Day 5: It’s Getting Easier but It’s Still Challenging

Welcome back to my journey into the world of CKO Kickboxing and kicking anxiety and depression one roundhouse kick at a time.

WELCOME to Day 5. I say WELCOME because I’ve finally started to notice I’m not as sore, the moves are getting easier, and I think I’ve started to get the hang of it. Don’t tell my instructors but I think they actually seemed to be easier to handle.

Laps around the gym? Heh. No sweat.

Push-ups? More like what ups!

When it came time to do the combinations I didn’t feel like I spent half the time looking at my bag like Bugs Bunny going, “Eh…What’s up doc?”

Instead, it’s Jab, cross, left hook, right uppercut, left roundhouse, squat, right front kick, push the bag, go again!

Today’s Instructor

Today’s instructor was the owner, Robert, and he runs class a bit differently with a set time dedicated to weights, which I enjoy because it’s nice to take time out from punching the bags for a few minutes.

Robert is a bit of a comedian with how he runs class and can have you in stitches at times. It can seem like improv at CKO which makes it a fun flip on the workout. Don’t get me wrong, though. He’s a tough instructor. He can kill you with jokes and the work out at the same time. He’s a multi-talented guy.

He’s serious when he comes to challenging yourself. He reminds us that if it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you. I remind myself that when I want to go pick up a 5 lb weight for weights time when I know I can handle the 8lb weight instead.

Body Changes

During a quick break in class, I asked Robert about my hands and showed him how bad they were shaking. I’d noticed my hands were doing that a lot since starting at the gym a week ago.

He told me that was normal and a fellow classmate had overheard me and told me the same. They said that would slow down and go away as my body got used to coming more often. It was a relief to know that I wasn’t losing my mind…yet.

I had also noticed a gag reflex that had kicked in and Audrey had told me that would go away as well as my body got used to the increase in fluids. I had no idea my body would go through these kinds of changes when I started working out. Which takes me to my next lesson…

Never Underestimate The Importance Of A Good Bra

As the class came to a close and we had our final minute of attacking our bags, I had my first wardrobe malfunction and realized the importance of a good bra for working out. My zipper front bra snapped wide open in the front!

Thankfully, I’m the only one that realized my little mishap. I plan on destroying my current bra once I find something that will serve me better in the future.

It’s hard to train like a superhero but I have to say CKO is making it fun. I’m looking forward to continuing my journey and seeing where it takes me.

Until next time guys, keep kicking.
