For the first time this year at Dragon Con, attendees can compete in Jim Henson’s Creature Shop Challenge Live. The contest will be Farscape-themed and judged by Brian Henson (Labyrinth, Farscape) and Kirk Thatcher (Dinosaurs, Muppets Tonight), and Halle Stanford (The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance), President of Television for The Jim Henson Company. Gigi Edgley (Farscape‘s Chiana) will host.

One winner will be invited to tour The Jim Henson Company in New York City or Los Angeles and will receive a travel stipend, courtesy of Dragon Con and The Jim Henson Company.

The challenge brief released yesterday describes the characters that contestants must create and perform. You have between now and the con (less than a month!) to build an original character creature or creature costume that reflects Farscape and incorporates at least one mechanical effect. Characters will be judged on strength of design and concept, believability, and finishing.

And it can be big, and it doesn’t have to walk, but note for you large-scale fans: it does have to fit in the display space in the ballroom. The judges aren’t coming to you.

“We hear from fans again and again how inspired they were by our series Jim Henson’s Creature Shop Challenge,” said Brian Henson, Chairman of The Jim Henson Company. “The incredible level of artistry and talent in the costumes and creatures at Dragon Con got us excited to do this contest. It will be amazing to see participants bring out their best work in the spirit of a real challenge of creativity and skill.”

Registration could fill up, so take a look at that challenge brief and start building!
