Why are you reading this article and not watching Thor: Ragnarok on Blu-ray or DVD? Well, if it happens to be before March 6, then it’s because you can’t. But after that? C’mon! There’s recently been so much hype for the new Black Panther movie (rightfully so) that we almost forgot about Marvel’s last masterpiece. Well, I’m here to remind you why you should own this movie. GeekDad already offered up 10 things parents should know about the movie, but here’s 5 reasons you should add Thor: Ragnarok to your Blu-ray collection (that aren’t Taikia Waititi):

Stunning Visuals
The bright colors and distinct landscapes in Thor: Ragnarok are what Blu-ray was made for. Plus, like I learned in the special features, much of the design was heavily based on Jack Kirby’s artwork. (So much so that the mural in the back of the Grandmaster’s suite is actual Jack Kirby artwork.) Really, most Marvel movies have cool sets, but I don’t know of another movie as other-worldly and beautifully stunning as they are in Ragnarok.

Sweet Featurettes
Ok, so they aren’t as long as I’d like, but being able to learn more about several key parts of the movie are an added bonus that you’ll find on the Blu-ray. There’s one looking at the strong female characters of Hela (Cate Blanchett) and Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), one about bringing Thor out of the comics and onto the big screen, another about the evolution of Thor (Chris Hemsworth) as his character has developed over the course of the marvel movies, and more. Here’s one about Kirby’s impact on Thor, but there’s several great ones included in this release:

Stupidly Fun Humor
The movie itself is hilarious, and if you like Guardians of the Galaxy-style humor you’re in for a real treat, but the special features are some added laughs you can only get if you buy the flick. In addition to the gag reel, you’ll also get to see a follow-up to the hilarious Team Thor short where we see Thor as an aloof roommate to average joe Darryl on Earth. This one finds Darryl with a new roomate in Jeff Goldblum’s Grandmaster.

Refresh Your Marvel Memory Before Infinity War
It’s hard to believe it’s been 10 years since Marvel started their cinematic journey with 2008’s Iron Man, but here we are. If you’re as excited as me to watch this Summer’s action-packed Avengers: Infinity War, then you may need a refresher on just how much has happened in the Marvel cinematic universe, and one of the bonus feature Marvel Studios: The First Ten Years – The Evolution of Heroes should do just that. The movie’s debut was just moved up a week and will be released on April 27, 2018, so start reviewing your history now, there WILL be a test!

Taika Waititi
Ok. I lied. How could I write an article about Thor: Ragnarok and NOT include mention of Taika Waititi, whose creative vision and unique humor are so pervasive in both the movie and the bonus features of the Blu-ray. Not only will you get to hear Waititi’s director’s commentary where you learn things like the reason they didn’t color the Grandmaster blue (like he was originally in the comics) is because he was concerned audiences would try to connect his character from Earth Girls Are Easy, but you’ll also get a bonus feature dedicated to his portrayal of the scene-stealing Korg. Before Ragnarok, the New Zealander only had minimal exposure here in the United States, but after his out-of-the-park homerun with this film, you can bet you’ll see his name on countless blockbusters in the future.
Despite putting the first two Thor movies near the bottom of my Marvel faves list, Thor: Ragnarok was legitimately a welcomed 180-degree turn in the franchise and it now fights for my pick as my #1 favorite (with Guardians of the Galaxy). For disclosure sake, I should say that I received a copy of the Blu-ray for review purposes, but I would still have proclaimed Thor: Ragnarok‘s gospel without it. If you haven’t seen it already, you are doing yourself a disservice. If you have seen the flick, then you know that you must make haste with your purchase. Pick up your own copy of the movie March 6!
