I’m not one to take my phone into the bathroom with me but my new toothbrush, The Oral-B Genius Pro 8000 is best used with my phone right in front of me.

What is it?

The Oral-B Genius Pro 8000 is a Bluetooth enabled toothbrush (yes…you read that right…) that connects to an app on your phone to give you real-time feedback on your brushing. It’s actually kind of cool.

Once you pair the two together the app will get you started with position detection. Your front-facing camera will keep an eye on your brushing and tell you when you’ve brushed enough in one section and it’s time to move on or if your hand position isn’t giving you the best results. You’re also timed, but if you don’t finish in the recommended two-minutes, don’t worry. Just keep brushing, just keep brushing, just keep brushing brushing brushing…whoops sorry. I’m back.

There are six modes:

  • Daily Clean
  • Gum Care
  • Sensitive
  • Whitening
  • Pro-Clean
  • Tongue Cleaning

Each has their own settings to get you the care you need. You can switch modes with the press of a button on the handle.

The latest app update lets your phone know if you’ve stopped brushing and it pauses your timer. No getting out of those full two-minute for you! If you want a little more fun in your routine, you can download the Fun Zone within the app and have some fun with filters while you brush. You start off with a tropical tiger theme and with each brushing you earn points to purchase another theme.

Curious to know if your child brushed for the full two-minutes? The app stores 30 sessions worth of data so there’s no guessing on who brushed and who didn’t.

Keep your dentist in the loop

An interesting aspect of the app is the ability for your dentist or hygienist to input their own goals for you within the app. They can make product recommendations, set times they want you to brush a particular area or tell you where you should focus more attention.

It also lets your dentist set reminders for your appointments, flossing, and other dental care. This all has to be done on your phone though, so you’ll have to stop playing Emoji Blitz for a few minutes while they put it in manually.

A cool addition would be for Oral B to let your dentist send their recommendations to the app via a web application or even check up on your progress (with your permission of course).

My only complaint up to this point is how loud it is. On the default setting, it can give you a bit of a startle on your first use. I guess it’s a testament to the toothbrush’s power.

The Oral-B Genius Pro 8000 retails for $139.99 and is available at your local toothbrush retailer and on Amazon. Make sure you check out their complete line of replacement heads so you can find the one that fits your needs best!
