Re-Roll: This Week’s Tabletop Game News for Week 2 of 2018

The board game (and board game-related!) news that caught our attention for the week ending January 12, 2018.

  • It’s the new year and with it comes some resolutions, possibly. I pledged to clean up and organize my collection, a goal I’m about halfway done with already. Have you made any resolutions that involve gaming?
  • Some game called Gloomhaven (read our review) comes out in retail next week. Has anyone heard of this one? It’s a small box game, right?
  • This week’s picture is from Charterstone (read our review).
  • News from our friends at Smirk & Dagger this week: First came the official announcement that they are launching a new imprint called Smirk & Laughter, which will focus on games that engage on an emotional level. While the Smirk & Dagger label features lots of games that relied heavily on take-that mechanics, Smirk & Laughter will be more lighthearted and strategic. Games will begin showing up in March with Nut So Fast, a party game with great tokens, then, later in the year, Before there Were Stars, a storytelling game based on the constellations, and one more I can’t wait for. Tower of Madness will be coming in June and is a press-your-luck game with a tower full of marbles and tentacled skewers holding the marbles up. It is crazy fun!

    • The next games in the Calliope Games’ Titan Series have been released. In this wave are three titles: Ancestree from Eric M. Lang (read our review), Capital City from James Ernest, and Shutterbug from Mike Elliott. All are available now.
    • As part of ICV2’s ongoing series of an interview conducted with Asmodee North America’s CEO Christian Petersen and CMO Steve Horvath, the issue of counterfeiting is at the forefront of our minds again this week. It is a monumentally important issue for both small and large publishers in the industry and the interview is definitely worth reading if you’ve not looked at it yet.
    • Because 2018 seems to be the year of new imprints, Plan B is in on the action. They are launching Next Move, which will focus on light abstract games with an emphasis on strategy. There’s little information beyond that, but their first game, Reef, designed by Emerson Matsuuchi (Century: Spice Road, Specter Ops), will debut at Origins.
    • Richard Garfield has a new(ish) game out from Z-Man called Spynet. In an interview out this past week, he talks about the game and his process for developing it. The interview is an enjoyable and quick read and worth a look.
    • If you’re one for mystery, you’ll be happy to know that not only does Asmodee have another newly revised and retranslated expansion for Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective on the way (we’ve mentioned this in the past), but they also have a preview of one of the cases. The Demise of a Teetotaller is the first of ten cases in the Carlton House and Queen’s Park expansion, and you can read the introduction and get a preview of the case here.
    • Raiders of the North Sea (read our review) gets two expansions next week. Hall of Heroes and Fields of Fame both bring dynamically new ways to play the Spiel des Jahres nominated game and integrate very nicely with the base game. Purchase both expansions at your local retailer and you can get a micro promo set for free.
