I am excited that GeekMom has the chance to share the launch of the first DVD from the rebooted version of The Powerpuff Girls, titled Tiara Trouble. But first, a story.
If you get into the wayback machine, there was a time in the mid-1990s, well before we had kids, when my husband and I would relax in the evenings with a glass of wine or bottle of beer and late nights on Cartoon Network. We are proud to have been among the first who saw the creative explosion through their Friday night Cartoon Cartoon! and What a Cartoon! programming, from Dexter’s Laboratory to Cow and Chicken. My husband and I were also huge fans of Space Ghost Coast to Coast, one of Cartoon Network’s first original shows (reruns of which air on Sunday nights), which revoiced old Hanna-Barbera characters into a snarky talk show format. It might have been the highlight of our Friday nights when we were working 60-70 hour weeks and just too tired to do anything else.
It was an episode of Space Ghost Coast to Coast that first introduced me to the original version of The Powerpuff Girls in about 1995. Space Ghost was “interviewing” the creators and animators behind the newest shows on What a Cartoon! On one particular episode, a very-young, very-long-haired Craig McCracken was on the show. He starts introducing the premise behind the series before Space Ghost irreverently cuts him off and quickly changes the subject.
We tuned in to the series premiere and we really enjoyed it! We were balancing The Powerpuff Girls with the other cartoons, and as spin offs and extended cuts of some of the What a Cartoon! shows started to emerge, so did our ability to keep up well with the series. Also, we got transferred to Korea, and we flipped to the Australian Cartoon Network while we lived in Seoul. Alas, no more Space Ghost Coast to Coast, and the airing times of many of our other favorites changed.
Fast forward nearly 20 years, and The Powerpuff Girls has returned in the form of this incredible reboot, sensitive to the changing nature of how females are portrayed in pop culture. Bubbles, Blossom, and Buttercup have new personalities, new voices, and new enemies to conquer. All before bedtime! My sons watch the episodes routinely, along with other CN favorites such as Adventure Time and We Bare Bears. Last year Jenny Bristol was able to chat with the Bob Boyle, the producer of the new series, about the new art direction, casting, and evolution of the characters to fit with more modern times.

Tiara Trouble features twelve of the most popular episodes from the first season of the rebooted series, including their highest-rated “Viral Spiral” and their controversial transgender-themed “Horn, Sweet Horn!,” featuring Donny, a unicorn who identifies as a monster.

Tiara Trouble has a running length of about 121 minutes and will be available for sale Tuesday, February 14 on DVD. It has an MSRP of $14.97 but is available for less at the larger retailers. Copies will be found where DVDs are sold, such as Best Buy, Walmart, and Amazon.
