Summer is just moments away. It is time for root beer popsicles and running through sprinklers and catching fireflies.

It’s also time for summer reading.

As parents, we all know how important it is to read aloud to our children daily. Still, I will be the first to admit that it can be tough to reel in raucous toddlers. How do you get busy little bodies to sit still for a read aloud?

You need to get your hands on some super-fun read-alouds!

When my boys were younger, they loved books about machines. We devoured anything by Byron Barton. We adored the McMullen duo. We read the Little Blue Truck series until its edges were tattered.

And who could forget about Red Truck and Yellow Copter? Hamilton’s stories had my children hanging on every word. Bonus? These books will not make you groan when your child asks to read them again. With simple text, engaging illustrations, and heaps of sound-effects, these books are fun to read aloud!

I’ve recently learned that there is a brand-new book in this fantastic series and it’s just in time for summer fun!

Red Truck by Kersten Hamilton and illustrated by Valeria Petrone

Red Truck tells the story of a tow truck saving a school bus from a big mud puddle. With fantastic sound effects and charming illustrations, this is a book that will keep your children coming back for more. When my boys were toddlers, we read this book so many times that they would take turns “reading” the book to me—they had memorized the entire thing.

Yellow Copter by Kersten Hamilton and illustrated by Valeria Petrone

Released in 2015, Yellow Copter is the follow-up to Red Truck and, once again, Hamilton and Petrone do not disappoint. Your children will rejoice when Yellow Copter whup-whup-whups its way to rescue a teacher stranded at the tippity-top of a Ferris wheel after failed attempts by planes and cranes. This was a family favorite last summer!

Blue Boat by Kersten Hamilton and illustrated by Valeria Petrone

Released on May 24th, Blue Boat is the long-awaited follow-up to Red Truck and Yellow CopterBlue Boat tells the story of a family who sets off sailing, only to run into trouble. Their mayday calls are answered by rescue boats and… you guessed it… Blue Boat. When a storm hits, all the other boats must turn back but Blue Boat continues on. With a huge bwhoom!, Blue Boat tugs the family back to safety.

It can be challenging to entice busy toddlers to sit for a read aloud, but reading aloud is important. By selecting books with delightful illustrations and engaging text, you can pique their interest. Before you know it, they’ll be asking you to read again and again and again!
