Calling all math geeks! Yeah, you know who you are! Do you have friends or relatives pondering what to give you as a gift? Or do you know a math geek who seems particularly difficult to shop for?
Look no further than Bill Tavis and his Kickstarter that launched today! Tavis is a designer who has a particular interest in fractals. He also has a particular interest in maps, especially older historical maps. He combined two of his passions together and came up with an old-world-map styling of a poster that teaches you everything you ever wanted to know about Mandelbrot sets, which is best described in its Wikipedia entry.
The map, which he has appropriately named “Mandelmap,” is gorgeous. Within the convergent fractal boundaries, Tavis has provided information describing the various ways one can display the solutions, from the cardioids to the periodic bulbs, to the different types of branching that can occur.
Tavis has received quite a bit of feedback on this map, and he would like to raise the money for an initial print run so he can sell these maps as full-sized posters. He also has postcards available. Contributors to the Kickstarter will be receiving the first copies of the maps and postcards, and the sooner you donate, the better the poster deals will be.
