‘DC Super Hero Girls’: The Doors of Super Hero High Are Open

Comic Books Entertainment GeekMom

The much-anticipated (at least by my six-year-old) new series DC Super Hero Girls kicks off today with a re-designed web site and webisode! The short animated episode introduces us all to Super Hero High, where heroes and villains alike go to school to learn about their powers and make friends.

With a catchy pop theme song and wide-eyed, smiling characters, it’s easy to see why this series is practically guaranteed to catch the eye of young super hero fans. And if they’ve seen Monster High or Ever After High, this might feel like familiar territory.

In an interview at USA Today, DC Entertainment revealed plans for social media, TV specials, novels, and graphic novels, along with a toy line of action figures and LEGO sets. But don’t expect the figures to be fashion dolls like Barbie:

Mattel saw Super Hero Girls as an opportunity to create the first real action figures geared toward girls but also design dolls that “are these really strong, athletic physiques and have great qualities and represent female empowerment,” explains Lisa McKnight, Mattel’s senior vice president for marketing in North America.

The first webisode plays like a Who’s Who of the DC Universe, all with adorable costume re-designs (I’ve never seen Star Sapphire with so many clothes on) for the diverse group of heroes and villains alike. Is that Grodd I spy as a teacher?

With the cute designs and special attention that went into the toy design, I’m probably more excited than my daughter is to see where DC Super Hero Girls goes. Visit the official web site for updated character descriptions, games, and more.
